The Swiss Alp Associations Justistal between Sigriswil and Beatenberg fixed their cheese sharing event every year on the end of September. On the traditional cheese sharing the farmers, who had their cows up on the alp this summer, will meet. They will share the cheese in relation to the amount of milk of their cows. The big cheeses will be taken out of the “Spycher” (chalet in which the cheese is stored) towards to lunch time. It will be piled up, older cheese well mixed with recently produced cheese. Who will get which pile is decided by lot.Already before and during the ritual there is a cheerful party. The end of the summer up on the alp is celebrated in a simple way; spontaneous yodelling is heard from visitors or farmers. Sometimes visitors will hear „Schwyzerörgeli“- sounds, played by attendants of the cheese sharing.
After the cheese sharing the cows will come down from the Alp to Sigriswil. The ones that gave a lot of milk will have nice flowers in their head. The municipality has a strong agricultural identity and farming traditions are still kept. The tradition of «Chästeilet» or distribution of cheeses in the Justistal has been held for 250 years. This is a festival in which cheese produced during the summer grazing months is taken out, piled up and then divided amongst the farmers. The custom is accompanied by yodelling and traditional accordion music.
